  • Couple's interview with Barbara Walters will air Friday on '20/20Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are ready to reveal their six-month-old twins to the world. Moroccan and Monroe will make their television debut on “20/20” with Barbara Walters this Friday.
In the teaser picture released by ABC, Moroccan and Monroe appear a little a camera shy. You can only see the back of their heads but you can still tell “Dem Babies” are beyond cute!
Mariah and Nick will talk to Walters about their struggle to conceive, Mariah’s high-risk pregnancy and how the superstar couple makes marriage work. Of course, there will also be lots of talk about raising the twins.
In a preview clip for the special, Mariah and Nick talk about strange pregnancy cravings. Nick admits it was hard to find candy apples at two in the morning and how he was always on a quest to quench Mariah’s thirst.
“The thing that we always would share together would be Big Gulp Slurpees from 7-Eleven,” Nick tells Walters.
Canon also promoted the interview on his website, writing, “Me, my wife, our children and Barbara Walters...why wouldn't you be watching?”
We know we’ll be tuning in on Friday to see more of “Roc” and “Roe”!'

Just did it: Sports star Michael Jordan engaged

Michael Jordan and his longtime model girlfriend Yvette Prieto got engaged on Christmas Day.
NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan has been off the court for years; now, he's off the market.
The sports star is getting married again, his publicist Estee R. Portnoy confirmed to CNN on Thursday. Jordan and longtime girlfriend, Yvette Prieto, got engaged on Christmas Day,.
The couple has been seen at various high-profile public events in recent years, including the Kentucky Derby, golf outings and vacations.
Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six championships -- two three-peats -- in the 1990s, before finishing his career with the Washington Wizards in 2003. He retired twice -- the first time to play baseball, the second time to be with his family.
Jordan and then-wife Juanita divorced in 2006 after 17 years of marriage. In 2007, Forbes Magazine listed Jordan's divorce as the costliest in celebrity history with a severance package exceeding $150 million.
Viewed widely as the world's greatest basketball player, Jordan, 48, today is a cigar-chomping golfer and socialite. In 2010, he became the first former player to be a majority owner of an NBA team, buying the Charlotte Bobcats.
Instead of a basketball wife, Prieto enters the engagement largely as a golf wife, judging from her public appearances. In 2009, during opening ceremonies for the Presidents Cup, she was seen alongside Nicki Stricker, the wife of PGA Tour star Steve Stricker, and Elin Nordegren, then-wife of Tiger Woods.
Since his hoops days, Jordan has continued lucrative endorsement deals with corporate giants such as Coca-Cola, Hanes and Nike, which houses a subsidiary with his namesake, Jordan Brand.
Jordan's name has been in the news recently. His new Air Jordans caused a shopping frenzy around Christmas. Several incidents of violence were reported near shoe stores that sold the expensive sneakers.
A wedding date for Jordan and Prieto has not been announced

North Korean leader Kim Jong Il dies at 69

PYONGYANG, North Korea — Kim Jong Il, North Korea's mercurial and enigmatic longtime leader, has died of heart failure. He was 69.
In a "special broadcast" Monday from the North Korean capital, state media said Kim died of a heart ailment on a train due to a "great mental and physical strain" on Dec. 17 during a "high intensity field inspection." It said an autopsy was done on Dec. 18 and "fully confirmed" the diagnosis.
A spokesperson at the Unification Ministry confirmed to NBC News that Kim died on Saturday.
Kim is believed to have suffered a stroke in 2008, but he had appeared relatively vigorous in photos and video from recent trips to China and Russia and in numerous trips around the country carefully documented by state media. The communist country's "Dear Leader" — reputed to have had a taste for cigars, cognac and gourmet cuisine — was believed to have had diabetes and heart disease.
Story: 'Young general' seen poised to take over N. Korea dynasty
"It is the biggest loss for the party ... and it is our people and nation's biggest sadness," an anchorwoman clad in black Korean traditional dress said in a voice choked with tears. She said the nation must "change our sadness to strength and overcome our difficulties."
South Korean media, including Yonhap news agency, said South Korea put its military on "high alert" and President Lee Myung-bak convened a national security council meeting after the news of Kim's death. Officials couldn't immediately confirm the reports
President Barack Obama was monitoring reports of the death of the North Korean leader, the White House said Sunday night, adding that U.S. officials were in contact with allies in South Korea and Japan.
"We remain committed to stability on the Korean peninsula, and to the freedom and security of our allies," the White House said in a statement.

Traffic in the North Korean capital was moving as usual Monday, but people in the streets were in tears as they learned the news of Kim's death. A foreigner contacted at Pyongyang's Koryo Hotel said hotel staff were in tears.
Asian stock markets moved lower amid the news, which raises the possibility of increased instability on the divided Korean peninsula.

Storms pound Philippines in the thick of night, kill at least 436

Image: Residents are rescued by volunteers following a flash flood in Cagayan de Oro city, PhilippinesMANILA, Philippines — Flash floods devastated a southern Philippines region unaccustomed to serious storms, killing more than 400 people while they slept, rousting hundreds of others to their rooftops and turning two coastal cities into muddy, debris-filled waterways that were strewn Saturday with overturned vehicles and toppled trees.
Most of the victims were asleep Friday night when raging floodwaters cascaded from the mountains after 12 hours of rain from a late-season tropical storm in the southern Mindanao region. The region is unaccustomed to the typhoons that are common elsewhere in the nation of islands.
Ayi Hernandez, a former congressman, said he and his family were resting in their home in Cagayan de Oro late Friday when they heard a loud "swooshing sound" and water quickly rose ankle-deep inside. He decided to evacuate to a neighbor's two-story house.
"It was a good thing, because in less than an hour the water rose to about 11 feet (3.3 meters)," filling his home up to the ceiling, he said.
Photoblog: Storm, floods hits south Philippines
At least 436 were dead, based on a body count in funeral parlors, Philippine Red Cross Secretary General Gwen Pang told The Associated Press. She said that 215 died in Cagayan de Oro — a city of more than 500,000 — and 144 in nearby Iligan, with more than 300,000 residents. The rest died in several other southern and central provinces, she said.
Many of the bodies were unclaimed after nearly 24 hours, suggesting that entire families had died, Pang said.
In a text message to Reuters, Pang said the death toll was expected to rise.
"Our death toll was based on the actual number of bodies that were brought to funeral homes in the two cities that were the hardest hit by the typhoon," Pang said.
Missing in the stormThe number of missing was unclear Saturday night. Before the latest Red Cross figures, military spokesman Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang said about 250 people were still unaccounted for in Iligan.
The swollen river sent floodwaters gushing through neighborhoods that do not usually experience flooding. A man floated in an inner tube in muddy water littered with plastic buckets, pieces of wood and other debris. Ten people in one home stood on a sloping roof, waiting for rescuers even as water still flooded the lower floors.
Television pictures showed bodies encased in mud, cars piled on top of each other and wrecked homes. Helicopters and boats searched the sea for survivors and victims.
"We ran for our lives when we heard a loud whistle blow and was followed by a big bang," Michael Mabaylan, 38, a carpenter, told Reuters. He said his wife and five children were all safe.
Aid worker Crislyn Felisilda cited concern about children who had became separated from their families or lost their parents. "Many children are looking for their loved ones... (and children were) crying and staring into space."
Rosal Agacac, a 40-year-old mother, was begging authorities to help find her two children after their shanty was swept to the sea. "Please President Noynoy, help me," she cried, holding a candle at a spot where their house stood before the floods, referring to President Benigno Aquino.
Benito Ramos, chief of the government's Civil Defense Office, attributed the high casualties in Mindanao "partly to the complacency of people because they are not in the usual path of storms" despite four days of warnings by officials that one was approaching
Thousands of soldiers backed up by hundreds of local police, reservists, coast guard officers and civilian volunteers were mobilized for rescue efforts, but they were hampered by the flooded-out roads and lack of electricity.
Many roads were cut off and there was no electricity, hampering relief efforts.
The missing included prominent Filipino radio broadcaster Enie Alsonado, who was swept away while trying to save his neighbors, Iligan Mayor Lawrence Cruz said.
Rep. Rufus Rodriguez of Cagayan de Oro said that about 20,000 residents of the city had been affected and that evacuees were packed in temporary shelters.
'Tragedy'Authorities recovered bodies from the mud after the water subsided. Parts of concrete walls and roofs, toppled vehicles and other debris littered the streets.
Rescuers in boats rushed offshore to save people swept out to sea. In Misamis Oriental province, 60 people were plucked from the ocean off El Salvador city, about six miles (10 kilometers) northwest of Cagayan de Oro, said disaster official Teddy Sabuga-a.
About 120 more were rescued off Opol township, closer to the city, he added.
Cruz said the Philippine coast guard and other rescuers were scouring the waters off Iligan for survivors or bodies that may have been swept away to sea.
Tropical Storm Washi dumped on Mindanao more than a month of average rains in just 12 hours.
It quickly cut across the region overnight and headed for Palawan province southwest of Manilaon Saturday night.
Forecaster Leny Ruiz said that the records show that storms that follow Washi's track come only once in about 12 years.
Lucilo Bayron, vice mayor of Puerto Princesa in Palawan, said he already mobilized emergency crews but local officials have not ordered an evacuation yet because the weather was still fine.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement that the Obama administration offered "deepest condolences" for the devastation in the southern Philippines.
"The U.S. government stands ready to assist Philippine authorities as they respond to this tragedy," the statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected."

Kobe Bryant's wife files for divorce

Kobe and Vanessa BryantOne week after Kobe Bryant's Los Angeles Lakers were denied a trade that would have landed superstar point guard Chris Paul, Kobe received more bad news.

    EX-FACTOR

Celebrity couples often don't have a Hollywood ending. Check out sports couples who split up.

Kobe Bryant's wife, Vanessa, filed for divorce on Friday from the Los Angeles Lakers star, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split from her husband of more than 10 years.
Vanessa Bryant signed the papers on Dec. 1. Kobe Bryant signed his response on Dec. 7 and it was filed Friday, according to the documents.
The filing of the documents comes more than eight years after Vanessa Bryant stuck by the basketball icon when he was accused of sexually assaulting a Colorado woman. The case was dropped when his accuser refused to testify, but the former league MVP admitted being unfaithful to his wife and settled a civil suit filed by the woman.
Unnamed sources told celebrity news website TMZ that Vanessa Bryant was filing for divorce because she believed her husband had been unfaithful again.
"She's been dealing with these incidents for a long time and has been a faithful wife, but she's finally had enough," one source said. "This one is the straw that broke the camel's back."
A representative for the couple released a statement saying, ''The Bryants have resolved all issues incident to their divorce privately with the assistance of counsel and a Judgment dissolving their marital status will be entered in 2012.''

Check out the lovely ladies of the NBA's all-WAGs team here.

Also in the statement, the Bryants ''ask that in the interest of our young children and in light of the upcoming holiday season the public respect our privacy during this difficult time.''
In the filing, Vanessa Bryant asked for joint legal and physical custody of the couple's two daughters, Natalia, 8, and Gianna, 5. Kobe Bryant asked for the same in his response. Vanessa Bryant also requested spousal support. Kobe Bryant has earned roughly $200 million — not including endorsements — during his 15-year career with the Lakers, but may have to give up half of his assets as part of a divorce settlement, as the couple is not believed to have signed a prenuptial agreement, TMZ reported.
Bryant met his future wife in 1999 on a music video shoot when Vanessa Laine was 18 years old. Six months later, she and the then-21-year-old Bryant became engaged. They married on April 18, 2001 after Bryant had turned 22.
When Kobe Bryant was charged with sexual assault in 2003, she appeared at a news conference, holding his hand and stroking it tenderly as the NBA star admitted he was guilty of adultery — but nothing else. Earlier, she had issued her own statement to the media, vowing to stand by her husband.

''I know that my husband has made a mistake — the mistake of adultery,'' she said in the statement at the time. ''He and I will have to deal with that within our marriage, and we will do so. He is not a criminal.''
The case against Kobe Bryant was later dismissed.
Last year, Kobe and Vanessa Bryant settled litigation with a former maid who accused the NBA star's wife of harassment. The Bryants countersued Maria Jimenez for violating a confidentiality agreement by talking to reporters about the family

Long-term jobless face deep cuts in benefitsTime is running out for Congress to renew extended unemployment benefits for millions of American workers out of a job. If the latest GOP proposal is enacted, time will also run out a lot sooner for the checks workers collect for extended jobless insurance benefits.
Workers in states with the worst job markets would be hit hardest under the GOP plan, which would shorten the maximum length of time a worker can collect benefits. In California, where the unemployment rate stands at 11.7 percent, the current 99-week maximum would be cut by 40 weeks. Workers in other hard-hit states, including Michigan, Illinois and Florida, would also see their extended benefits run out 40 weeks sooner than the current program, according to an analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
Democrats in the House and Senate favor renewing the program in full. The length of time workers can collect unemployment insurance varies by state from anywhere between 60 to 99 weeks.
As with past deadlines to renew the program, Congress has tied the vote to a series of other issues. This year, the benefits extension is part of a package of nine of other spending bills, including an extension of a payroll tax cut that’s also set to expire Dec. 31. House Republicans are also holding out for approval of an oil pipeline, proposed from Canada to U.S. Gulf Coast refineries, that the Obama administration has postponed while awaiting a review of the project’s environmental impact.
    advertisement
Unless the current law is renewed, an estimated 1.8 million workers will lose their weekly insurance check on January 1. The White House, which supports renewing the current program, has estimated that through 2012, about 6 million people would lose federally-funded extended benefits if Congress doesn't act.
The existing program of jobless benefits consists of a complex series of extensions to state-managed unemployment insurance that is paid for, in part, with premiums deducted from workers’ paychecks. As the jobless rate rose following the 2007 recession, Congress enacted series of those emergency extensions – or tiers – to the state-funded plans that typically provide 26 weeks of benefits.
There are four tiers of extended benefits. The Republican plan would maintain the first, 20-week, tier and cut the second one, now available in states with a jobless rate above 6 percent, by one week, to 13 weeks. The current third and fourth tiers, which provide as much as 19 weeks in states where the jobless rate is 8.5 percent or higher, would be eliminated. A separate Extended Benefits program can add as much as another 20 weeks, depending on the jobless rate in the state. That program would expire gradually, state by state, through 2012.
Despite recent signs of improvement in the job market, the unemployment rate has remained stubbornly high compared to past economic recoveries. That’s especially true for people out of work for extended periods. The jobless rate has exceeded 8.5 percent for the past 31 months, longer than at any time since the Bureau of Labor Statistics began tracking that rate in 1948. The average duration of unemployment now stands at nearly 41 weeks, according to the latest monthly jobs data.
    advertisement
That number will likely remain stubbornly high until the economic recovery spreads to several critical industries that haven't been hiring. Those sector aren't adding jobs because they’re “structurally impaired,” according to a recent research report from economists at Credit Suisse. And it looks like they’re going to remain crippled for some time.
From real estate, to finance to manufacturing, these sectors have all but shut down as job-creators. Together, these industries account for about half of the jobs lost from the January 2008 peak to the January 2010 trough. With little or no job growth from these sectors, it’s as if half of the job market’s cylinders just aren’t firing

Lowe's pulls ads from "All-American Muslim" showCommercials for home-improvement retailers have inexplicably become the latest battleground in the culture wars. After objections from a conservative Christian group, Lowe's has reportedly pulled its advertising from The Learning Channel's "All-American Muslim" television show.
The Tampa-based Florida Family Association has labeled the show "propaganda" that presents a "clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values." On its website, the group claims that 65 different brands have pulled their advertising from the show in response to emails from its supporters. That number could not be verified.
On Monday, The Associated Press cited a statement from Lowe's that called the show a "lightning rod" and acknowledged yanking its ads. "We believe it is best to respectfully defer to communities, individuals and groups to discuss and consider such issues of importance," the quote read, in part. Lowe's did not respond to requests for comment from msnbc.com.
Besides Lowe's, the FFA claimed that rival home-improvement brand The Home Depot will no longer run commercials during the show. But Home Depot spokesman Stephen Holmes said the company had never planned to run ads during "All-American Muslim."
"Whenever we have advertising run on a brand-new show, it's our process, it's our policy, that we review it before it runs," he said. Of the one commercial that did run and drew ire from the FFA, Holmes said, "TLC ran that without our knowledge." TLC is owned by Discovery Communications Inc
It's not clear if the ad controversy is hurting the show, which follows the lives of five Muslim families living in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Mich. TLC spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg said via email that the program has "strong advertising support." According to Nielsen, the show averages 1.2 million viewers per Sunday night episode.
The FFA describes itself as an organization that educates "people on what they can do to defend, protect and promote traditional, biblical values." It claims thousands of supporters

Russell Simmons tries to buy ads during 'All American Muslim'In the aftermath of Lowe's Home Improvement stores pulling their ads from broadcasts of "All American Muslim," hip-hop entrepreneur Russell Simmons stepped in to attempt to buy some of the ad time himself.
Lowe's had pulled their ads after a conservative Christian group contacted the retailer, calling the show a "clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values." Shortly after, Lowe's yanked the ads, saying that the show was a "lightning rod" and issued a statement that said in part, "we believe it is best to respectfully defer to communities, individuals and groups to discuss and consider such issues of importance."
Simmons, who is a Buddhist, first reacted on Twitter, calling the move "the most horrible s---," and then later tweeeting his support for the show, and that he was "trying to buy ads during #AllAmericanMuslim airing this Sunday, but now they are saying they are sold out. I will keep trying..."
A rep for TLC confirms that Simmons did indeed reach out and despite Lowe's move, availability of ad time was a problem. TLC issued a statement, showing its support for the show, which is in its first season. "We stand behind the show 'All American Muslim' and we're happy the show has strong advertising support."
TLC and Simmons aren't the only ones standing behind the show, however. USA Today columnist Souheila Al-Jadda was among those in the media defending the show, and Time columnist James Poniewozik slammed Lowe's

    U.S.SECRET TECHNOLOGY AT RISK

Drone that crashed in Iran risks secret U.S. technologyAn American drone that crashed in Iran last Thursday was on a mission for the CIA, and is now in the hands of Iran’s military, NBC News has learned.
U.S. officials tell NBC that CIA operators were flying the unmanned drone when it veered out of control and headed deep into Iran. The drone eventually ran out of fuel and crashed in Iran's remote mountains.
The nature of the drone’s mission was secret and sources say it's still not clear whether the drone was operating in Iran or Afghanistan.

Officials here confirm that the vehicle was a highly secret stealth drone called an RQ-170, which looks more like a flying wing than an airplane — the same kind of drone that circled over Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan as Navy Seals targeted the fugitive al-Qaida leader.
One major concern is that the Iranians could salvage highly sensitive technology used in the drone for cameras or sensors or even the stealth technology, and try to develop it for themselves.
Iranian media reported on Sunday that their country's military had shot down a U.S. reconnaissance drone in eastern Iran, but a U.S. official said there was no indication the aircraft had been shot down.
Iran has announced several times in the past that it shot down U.S., Israeli or British drones, in incidents that did not provoke high-profile responses.
"Iran's military has downed an intruding RQ-170 American drone in eastern Iran," Iran's Arabic-language Al Alam state television network on Sunday quoted a military source as saying.
"The spy drone, which has been downed with little damage, was seized by the Iranian armed forces," the source said. "The Iranian military's response to the American spy drone's violation of our airspace will not be limited to Iran's borders."
Iranian officials were not available to comment further.
The incident comes at a time when Tehran is trying to contain foreign outrage at the storming of the British embassy on Tuesday, after London announced sanctions on Iran's central bank in connection with Iran's nuclear enrichment program

    FEDS:COUPLE CLAIMED WELFARE,LIVE IN $1.2M HOME

Feds: Couple claimed welfare, lived in $1.2M homeSEATTLE -- A Seattle chiropractor and his wife live in a $1.2 million waterfront home and have spent the past eight years flying to Moscow, Paris, Israel, Turkey, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
All the while, federal authorities say, the couple was collecting more than $100,000 in welfare.
Now, the U.S. attorney's office is suing David Silverstein and Lyudmila Shimonova, accusing them of filing false claims and demanding that the couple pay back more than $135,000 in federal housing assistance since 2003. Prosecutors are also seeking tens of thousands of dollars in fines.
In gaining Section 8 housing assistance, Shimonova represented that she lived alone with her two children and that her household assets were less than $5,000. Silverstein received the monthly benefits of $1,272 as Shimonova's purported landlord, the government said.
Shimonova also received benefits under the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, as well as Social Security cash reserved for people who can't work due to age or disability and whose assets fall below a certain threshold — $3,000 for a married couple or $2,000 for a single person, the complaint said.

The $1.2 million waterfront home where prosecutors say a Seattle chiropractor and his wife lived while claiming welfare assistance is seen. The U.S. attorney's office filed a civil lawsuit Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, accusing David Silverstein and Lyudmila Shimonova of filing false claims.
"Defendants have separately and, it appears, in conjunction with one another made false representations to various state and federal agencies in order to obtain federally funded benefits," assistant U.S. attorneys Harold Malkin and Kayla Stahman wrote.
Meanwhile, they were traveling the world, according to Department of Homeland Security records.

Michael Radyshewsky, a federal welfare fraud investigator, wrote in an application to search the couple's home that they took weeklong trips to Moscow in 2003, Dominican Republic in 2005, and Mexico and France in 2009. In 2007, they went for 12 days to Israel, and this past June they took a two-week trip to Turkey.
Silverstein said Tuesday his lawyer asked him not to comment, and his lawyer, David Allen, did not immediately return a message. The home did not appear to have a listed phone number, and Shimonova's lawyer, Michele Shaw, did not return an email seeking comment.
The investigation included surveillance of the three-bedroom, 2,300-square-foot home on Lake Washington, during which agents observed his black Jaguar parked there frequently.
Though Shimonova had claimed she was single and lived there alone, Silverstein listed it as his residence on his driver's license and passport application, the prosecutors said.
But in documents filed so that he could receive the housing assistance, he listed his office as his residence to conceal that he was living with Shimonova — not her landlord, they said.
Furthermore, it appeared clear that the pair was actually married. Silverstein wrote on the website of his chiropractic business: "On a personal note, I am happily married with two children, whose careers are in medicine and Middle Eastern studies. As a family, we all enjoy snow-shoeing, mountain climbing and ocean sports."
A report of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle for the 2010 fiscal year listed "Mila and Dr. David Silverstein" as donors.

In addition to failing to disclose the marriage or living situation, Shimonova also failed to disclose bank accounts in her name containing tens of thousands of dollars, prosecutors said.
The lawsuit seeks to have the couple pay $11,000 in fines for each false claim the couple made. The U.S. attorney's office declined to comment on whether criminal charges are forthcoming

REPORT:AIR FORCE DUMPED REMAINS OF 274 TROOPS IN LANDFILL

Report: Air Force dumped remains of 274 troops in landfillThe incinerated partial remains of at least 274 American troops were dumped in a Virginia landfill, according to government records, The Washington Post reported on Thursday.
Air Force officials said that the dumping was hidden from families who had given authorization for the remains to be disposed of in a respectful and dignified manner, according to the newspaper.

There were no plans to inform families, officials told the newspaper.
New information revealed that the practice, exposed by The Washington Post in November, had become very widespread until it was halted in 2008, the newspaper reported.
Last month, Pentagon and Air Force officials said that figuring out how many remains were sent to the King George County, Va., landfill would take combing through the records of more than 6,300 troops.

"It would require a massive effort and time to recall records and research individually," Jo Ann Rooney, the Pentagon's acting undersecretary for personnel, said in a Nov. 22 letter to Rep. Rush Holt (Dem.-N.J.), who has pressured the Pentagon for information on the issue on behalf of one of his constituents, according to the newspaper.

An Army carry team moves a transfer case containing the remains of a soldier on Oct. 15, 2011 at Dover Air Force Base, Del.
Holt reacted angrily to the news, the newspaper reported.
"What the hell?" he told the Post. "We spent millions, tens of millions, to find any trace of soldiers killed, and they're concerned about a 'massive' effort to go back and pull out the files and find out how many soldiers were disrespected this way?"
"They just don't want to ask questions or look very hard," he added, according to the newspaper.

According to records the military gave The Post, between 2003 and 2008, 976 fragments from 274 personnel were cremated, incinerated and dumped in the landfill. An additional 1,762 remains, which could not be DNA tested because of damage from explosions, were gathered from the battlefield and dumped in a similar manner, the Air Force told the newspaper.
The widow of an Army sergeant killed in Iraq told the newspaper she was furious when she was told how some of her husband's remains were dumped in the landfill.
"They have known that they were doing something disgusting, and they were doing everything they could to keep it from us," Gari-Lynn Smith told the newspaper. She had been pressing the military for information on the subject for four years — ever since she got a report on her husband's autopsy and learned that some of the remains had not been put in the casket for his funeral, according to The Post.

BILL WOULD PERMIT ROBO-CALLS TO YOUR CELL PHONE

Bill would permit robo-calls to your cell phoneIf you like getting those automated messages on your home phone, then you’re just going to love a proposal in Congress. The bill (H.R. 3035) would allow these “robo-calls” to your cell phone — even if you didn’t give a company permission to contact you at that number.
Supporters of the “Mobile Informational Call Act of 2011” include the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Air Transport Association, as well as groups that represent bankers, mortgage lenders, college loan programs and debt collectors.
In a letter to Congress, they claim H.R. 3035 is needed to “modernize” existing law by enacting “limited common-sense revisions to facilitate the delivery of time-sensitive consumer information to mobile devices, while continuing to protect wireless consumers from unwanted telemarketing calls.”
They say robo-calls to cell phones would be used to alert you to food and drug recalls, data breaches, flight delays and appointment cancellations.
Howard Waltzman, an attorney representing the business groups supporting H.R. 3035, says this “non-marketing commercial information” is important to people. He tells me the ability to make contact via a mobile phone is “critical” because so many people now use a wireless device as their primary or only means of phone communication.
      advertisement
“We have no interest in seeing this bill permit telemarketing calls,” Waltzman tells me. “We would be perfectly fine with any clarification necessary to ensure that it doesn’t.”
(Read: Letter to Congress supporting H.R. 3035)
Consumer groups want Congress to kill the bill. They call it a dangerous proposal that could lead to more nuisance calls.
Delicia Reynolds, legislative director at the National Association of Consumer Advocates, tells me H.R. 3035 would “create potential chaos” because it would “open up everyone’s cell phone number without their consent.”
(Read: NACA letter opposing H.R. 3035)
The Attorneys General in every state also oppose the “Mobile Informational Call Act.” They believe it would erode your right to cell phone privacy. In a letter sent to Congress last week, they say H.R. 3035 would “undermine federal and state efforts to shield consumers from a flood of solicitation, marketing, debt collection and other unwanted calls and texts to their cell phones.”
      advertisement
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madgian, who is leading the charge against this bill, says these “informational” calls to cell phones could cost people who have a limited number of minutes to use each month.
This legislation would open the floodgates for telemarketers to annoy us with robo-calls to our cell phones at all hours of the day while forcing us to foot the bill,” Madigan said in news release. “It’s essentially a way for businesses to shift their advertising and marketing costs on to consumers.”
Critics are especially concerned that H.R. 3035 would let debt collectors (who are pushing this bill) contact people on their cell phones.
It’s estimated that by the end of this year about 25 percent of U.S. cell phone customers will use pre-paid wireless plans, where there’s a charge for every call received. Most prepaid users are in lower income households.
In their letter to Congress, the state attorneys general warn that if debt collectors are able to make robo-calls to cell phones it would “shift the cost of debt collection to the consumers and in particular, to those who can least afford it.”
Delicia Reynolds with the National Association of Consumer Advocates says debt collectors would be able to use your cell phone number even though you didn’t give it to them. They might be able to Google the number or get it from a data broker. They could also call your cell number even if they already have your land line number. It would be their choice, not yours!
      advertisement
“We’re very concerned that the bill would lower privacy rights for the consumer,” she says. “It will open up cell phones to unwanted and nuisance calls.”
Critics say one of the most troubling part of this bill is that it would allow businesses to make robo-calls to anyone’s personal or business cell phone for any commercial purpose — as long as it’s not a solicitation — even if that number is on the “Do Not Call Registry.”
Is a change in the law really needed?Under current law, a company can make contact you via a robo-call if you’ve given them explicit permission to do that or in the case of an emergency. H.R. 3035 would let them robo-call you on your cell phone if you gave them your number in any situation for any reason.
Visit a store or website and give them your cell phone number and you could get robotic follow-up calls of an “informational” nature. The proposed legislation does not provide a way to opt-out of this system. Business groups say they have no problem with adding an opt-out provision to the bill.
My two centsI realize that we are switching to a wireless society. But people think of cell phones — where the meter is running every time you make or receive a call — differently than landlines.
      advertisement
If I want to give an airline my cell phone number to contact me if there’s a flight delay, there’s already a way to do that when I buy my ticket. And I can tell my bank to contact me on my cell phone when I’m about to overdraw my account. But this way I control access to my number.
This bill has many flaws. I don’t think Congress should give companies carte blanche to use my cell phone number for automated prerecorded messages. They must be required to get my consent before they can send robo-calls to my cell.
I believe there should also be stiff financial penalties for debt collectors who make repeated robo-calls to the wrong phone number or who continue calling after they’ve been asked to stop.
H.R. 3035 is being considered by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

US calls for ban on in-car phone use ... even with Bluetoothis likely to influence the decisions of Congress and state legislatures in writing new safety laws, makes only two exceptions: You could still use GPS navigation devices, and you could use your cell phone in an emergency.Besides calling for government action, the NTSB also urged consumer electronics manufacturers to figure out a way to "disable the functions of portable electronic devices within reach of the driver when a vehicle is in motion" while at the same time allowing the driver to make a call in an emergency.
Spokesmen for the Consumer Electronics Association and CTIA—The Wireless Association did not immediately return calls for comment on whether such a device is possible .
"No call, no text, no update, is worth a human life," Deborah Hersman, chairwoman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said at a news conference in Washington.

Safety advocates have long called for such a ban to reduce the phenomenon of distracted driving, which the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says killed 3,092 people in 2010.

The HTSA reported last week that about 20 percent of all drivers and 50 percent of drivers 21 to 24 years old admit to having texted while driving. Overall, more than three-quarters of drivers say they are willing to answer calls on all, most or some trips.

"People continue to make bad decisions about driving distracted — but what's clear from all of the information we have is that driver distraction continues to be a major problem," NHTSA Administrator David Strickland said last week in reporting the numbers.
But similar studies linking cellphone use to poor driving have been challenged, most recently by researchers at Wayne State University in Detroit, who concluded last month that some earlier studies were seriously flawed.
The report, published in the journal Epidemiology, examined to earlier studies that examined crashes in which cellphone records showed that the driver had used a cellphone. Those studies "likely overestimated the relative risk for cell phone conversations," the researchers said, because they improperly assumed that the drivers were actually in motion when they were on the phone — in other words, they didn't factor in such so-called part-time driving.
Abstract: Cell Phone Use and Crash Risk: Evidence for Positive Bias
Only 10 states ban handheld devices right now, and 35 ban texting while driving.
The recommendation comes following the NTSB's investigation of an August 2010 accident in Gray's Summit, Mo., involving a pickup truck, two school buses and several other vehicles.
      advertisement

      advertisement

The accident was blamed on the 19-year-old driver of the pickup, who sent or received 11 texts in the 11 minutes before the pileup, which killed two people and injured 38 others.
"That finding raises a red flag to all of us on the highways," Hersman said.
Full NTSB report on 2010 Missouri crash
The NTSB recommendation wouldn't cover GPS devices, but — if it eventually becomes law — it would ban using your phone for any reason, even with a Bluetooth headset or speakers. The only exception would be to call 911 in an emergency
